Nikon D600 Launch Nights

We held launch nights for the D600 at our Canterbury and Northcote stores this past Wednesday evening, and they were rather successful if we do say so ourselves!

Joined by Nikon representatives, our customers were given a detailed presentation on this revolutionary new camera. We had a great turnout of keen people looking to find out as much as they could on the D600 and get hands on, with quite a few taking the plunge and upgrading to it on the night.

It is nice to see the big manufacturers developing a full frame camera in a more affordable pricing bracket, allowing many enthusiasts to step into the category and get that fantastic 35mm image quality. We could tell a lot of customers were chuffed with this addition to Nikon's lineup.

D600 Launch Night; Canterbury store in Sydney 19/09/2012
As with any new release into quite an extensive and polarizing market, there has been some criticism of the price still being a little too high for the included features, or the features not quite having that 'wow' factor. Considering a full frame DSLR was upwards of $4500 just a few years ago with fewer 'bells and whistles' as they say, we'd have to pick the D600 and indeed Canon's 6D as vital elements to the market giving keen photographers a little more opportunity to take the next step in their chosen paths, whether from a creative or professional standpoint.
We love having these experience nights at our stores, they're a great way to get to know our customer base and invite you to check us out on a more casual basis hopefully taking away a little more knowledge on something rather cool.
We'll be sure to let you know about our next events, so come on down for a chat and tell us what you think.

The Canon EOS 6D is Finally Unleashed!

If you have been paying attention to the constant stream of Photokina announcement popping up from all the major camera manufacturers, you may have been expecting this little gem from Canon, the Canon EOS-6D.

The latest in their enthusiast line-up, this one sports a 20.2 megapixel full frame CMOS sensor, incredible low light performance with an ISO range of 100-25600 (L: 50; H1:51200; H2:102400) and of course the coveted Full HD 1080p video so respected in modern Canon cameras. Add in features like built-in Wi-Fi and GPS and you have a seriously featured-filled little number.

Best of all, it is priced in a range many camera afficionados see as attainable, with quality output and of course the huge range of Canon compatible products at your disposal.

Naturally, it has been immediately pitted against the recently released Nikon D600. Brand loyalty aside, which one do you think you would go for?

Nikon D600 - The People's Full Frame!

Insanity at this price!

Nikon Unveils Three New COOLPIX Compact Cameras for 2012

Nikon has been among the first off the rank in unleashing their brand new compacts out into the wild for 2012, and it seems there is something of a revolution on the horizon.

You may have heard by now that the all-new Nikon COOLPIX S800c runs on the Android™ platform, making this a pioneer “smart camera” of sorts with the added functionality of effortless wireless transfer of your photos to smartphones and tablets, sharing to social networks and of course access to over 500,000 apps through Google Play direct to your camera.

Not to mention the distractions of email, YouTube and Google Maps – we wonder if you will ever get time to take photos. Though, we eagerly await hands-on reviews of this product – the camera itself seems pretty darn decent, with a 16-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor, ten times (10x) optical zoom, built-in GPS tagging and access to the myPicturetown app, an online storage and sharing system for photos and full albums.

Perhaps the only immediate concerns might be the reduced battery life almost always associated with smart devices, and the lack of 3G compatibility. What do you think?

In addition to this, Nikon has released the latest in their “pro compact” sector, the COOLPIX P7700. Affording the user full manual control and DSLR-like image quality with exceptional performance in low light, it rivals the long-standing Canon G-series as a perfect compromise between compact and DSLR. The 12.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, 7.1x optical zoom and improved lens shift vibration reduction help make it the best instalment yet.
Perhaps the outstanding feature of the COOLPIX P7700 is the amount of control on offer in video mode. Of course it is Full HD, 1080p with stereo sound, but you can also tinker with the shutter speed, ISO settings and aperture to achieve new heights in video performance and get the look you want.

The last one in this new gamut of COOLPIX goodness is the COOLPIX S6400, sounding off for the more entry level point-and-shooters.

The COOLPIX S6400 steps it up a little from the simplicity of the COOLPIX S01, providing a whopping twelve times (12x) optical zoom with lens shift vibration reduction and touch screen operation, including Target Finding Auto Focus – simply point and click and the camera automatically predicts the subject it should focus on resulting in an painless sharp image.

We should start seeing these little beauties hit shelves around the end of September, and we will update the product links on this post with our own as soon as they're available for preorder.

Canon EOS 650D DSLR Camera Grip Issue

Canon 650D Body

Back on the 6th July, Canon Australia announced a service notice relating to an issue with the front rubber grip on some EOS 650D DSLR cameras.

The problem is due to a substance produced by the rubber grip - namely, zinc bis (N,N’-dimethyldithiocarbamate). This is caused by a chemical reaction that turns the rubber surface white when it comes into contact with other materials. And apparently high temperature and humidity makes this worse.

Certain lots produced between 31st May and 15th June 2012 were identified as being susceptible to the issue and as a result Canon Australia prevented any units within that range from entering the supply chain in Australia.

However, as a precautionary measure, Canon has broadened the serial number range of potentially affected products to include lots produced up to 27th June. They have identified a small number of units between Australia and New Zealand that fall within this increased buffer range.

To identify whether your camera is affected, Canon Australia has provided an online serial number checker.

Canon advises users of EOS 650D cameras who have already checked their camera serial number prior to 3 August 2012 to please repeat the process.

Owners of potentially affected cameras purchased through Digital Camera Warehouse may contact us on 1300 365 220 or customerservice@digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au to arrange a swap of the affected camera for new stock, or contact Canon directly on 13 13 83 to arrange for a free service.

Further information as well as important information on use can be found on Canon Australia's support page.

Canon apologises for any inconvenience caused by this issue.

Panasonic Heralds New Lumix DMC-G5, LX7 and Compacts

Panasonic has announced the latest in their range of G-series mirrorless compact system cameras will be the Lumix DMC-G5.

Boasting a new - and very comfy looking - grip design that's sure to assist in stable shooting,  the G5 also features a 16 megapixel liveMOS sensor, re-designed Venus Engine image processor and 920K-dot free-angle Touch Screen LCD.

Other notable specs include Light Speed AF,  high-speed continuous shooting at 6 fps, and a pretty neat 1,440K-dot eye-detect EVF that starts the AF focusing as soon as you raise your eye to look through it.

And, of course, what self-respecting digital camera would be without full HD video capability these days? Certainly not this one, incorporating 1920x1080/50p with stereo audio, full-time AF and Touch AF for executing sweet pull focus, just like the pros!

Along with the G5, Panasonic has announced the latest in their high-end compact series, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7 (pictured above). The LX7 looks pretty neat, boasting a super-fast LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMILUX lens with F1.4-F2.3 aperture range. And sticking with the 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor with some signal-to-noise ratio improvements should make the LX7 a snazzy performer in low light.

The replacement for the super-zoom FZ150 comes in the form of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 (pictured above) - a 24x optical zoom model with a constant f/2.8 aperture! Yes, you read that correctly, folks, f/2.8 at 600mm focal length. Panasonic has amazingly fit this into a compact bridge digital camera. What does it mean? Well, it should give you the ability to capture very distant subjects in dimmer lighting conditions than was ever possible before in this type of camera.

Other announcements include the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ60, another big zoom model with 24x optical zoom, similar to the FZ200 but without the faster lens; Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ20 - a compact bridge camera with a big 21x optical zoom; and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-SZ5 - a slim and compact camera with high quality 10x optical zoom and Wi-fi capability.

All these exciting brand-spanking models should start to become available some time around September 2012.
